Standing Stone NO060630How to find: About 0.5km north of the village of Enochdhu on the A924 Blairgowrie - Pitlochry route the standing stone is to be seen in a plantation immediately north of the road. Best time of year to visit: Mid October / late February or any clear night. This small single stone stands in a conifer wood just by the road. It is under 1.5 m tall. It is leaning slightly, but was surveyed as if it were still vertical in its socket. Its long axes are aligned north-east to south-west. To the north-east the bearing of 59.8° with a barely visible horizon of 5.3° gives a declination of +20.5°. This is of no known significance. To the south-west we have an azimuth of 239.8°. The conifer covered Kindrogan Hill forms the horizon in that direction, about one kilometre distant. The height of this horizon is 8.9°. These figures give a declination value of -8.3°. The sun sets at this point about half way between the autumn equinox in September and the Quarter day early in November, and again half way between the Quarter day in early February and the spring equinox. The constellation Orion would have set behind the hill in the position indicated all through the Neolithic and Bronze age periods. Today the constellation rides higher in the sky and passes over the hill to set well to the north.
